What does the Qur’an say about the Bible? Examining Islamic teaching on the Torah and Gospel, whether Scripture was corrupted, and why Muslims should read the Bible for themselves.
A Question for Honest Seekers
If you’re a Muslim reading this, we want to begin with respect.
We respect your devotion to Allah. We respect your commitment to prayer, fasting, and submission to God. We respect that you take your faith seriously enough to search for truth.
This article is not an attack on Islam or Muslims. It’s an invitation to examine what your own holy book says about the Bible—and to consider whether you’ve been told the whole truth.
Here’s the central question:
Does the Qur’an affirm the Bible (Torah and Gospel) as the Word of God, or does it reject it as corrupted?
Your answer to this question will determine whether you should read the Bible—or avoid it.
Let’s examine what the Qur’an actually says.
What the Qur’an Says About the Bible
The Qur’an Affirms the Torah
Surah 5:43-44: “But how do they come to you for judgment while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allah? Then they turn away after that; but those are not believers. Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light.”
The Qur’an calls the Torah “the judgment of Allah” and says it contains “guidance and light.”
Surah 5:46: “And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light.”
The Qur’an affirms the Gospel contains guidance and light.
Surah 3:3-4: “He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel before as guidance for the people.”
The Qur’an says Allah revealed the Torah and Gospel as guidance.
The Qur’an Commands Jews and Christians to Follow Their Scriptures
Surah 5:43: “But how do they come to you for judgment while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allah?”
If the Torah was corrupted, why would Allah ask why Jews aren’t following it?
Surah 5:47: “And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed—then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient.”
Allah commands Christians to judge by the Gospel—not by a corrupted version, but by what Allah revealed in it.
If the Gospel was corrupted by the time of Muhammad, why would Allah command Christians to follow it?
The Qur’an Says Allah’s Word Cannot Be Changed
Surah 6:34: “And there is no changer of the words of Allah.”
Surah 6:115: “And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words.”
Surah 10:64: “For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah.”
The Qur’an is clear: Allah’s words cannot be changed, altered, or corrupted.
If the Torah and Gospel are Allah’s words (as the Qur’an affirms), and Allah’s words cannot be changed (as the Qur’an affirms), then the Torah and Gospel cannot have been corrupted.
The Claim of Biblical Corruption (Tahrif)
Despite what the Qur’an says, many Muslims today claim the Bible has been corrupted (tahrif). They argue that Jews and Christians changed the text to remove prophecies about Muhammad or to corrupt Allah’s message.
Where Does This Claim Come From?
The doctrine of tahrif developed centuries after Muhammad as a way to explain why the Bible and Qur’an contradict each other on key doctrines (the Trinity, Jesus’ crucifixion, salvation, etc.).
If the Bible contradicts the Qur’an, there are only three options:
- The Qur’an is wrong
- The Bible is wrong
- Both are wrong
Since Muslims cannot accept that the Qur’an is wrong, they claim the Bible must have been corrupted.
But this creates a serious problem.
The Logical Problem with Tahrif
If you believe the Bible was corrupted, you must answer these questions:
1. When Was It Corrupted?
Was it corrupted before Muhammad or after Muhammad?
If before Muhammad:
- Then the Qur’an is affirming a corrupted book when it calls the Torah and Gospel “guidance and light”
- Then Allah commanded Christians to follow a corrupted Gospel (Surah 5:47)
- Then the Qur’an’s claim that “none can alter His words” (Surah 6:115) is false
If after Muhammad:
- Then we should be able to find manuscript evidence of the changes
- But we have thousands of Bible manuscripts dating to before Muhammad—and they match modern Bibles
Either way, the tahrif claim creates theological problems for Islam.
2. Who Corrupted It?
If the Bible was corrupted, who did it?
- Jews? But the Qur’an praises some Jews as righteous (Surah 3:113-114)
- Christians? But the Qur’an calls Christians “People of the Book” and says some are guided (Surah 5:66, 5:82)
- All of them working together? Jews and Christians have been enemies for centuries—how could they coordinate to corrupt the same text?
The Qur’an never says the Bible was corrupted. It says Jews and Christians misinterpret and disbelieve it—but not that they changed the text itself.
Surah 3:70-71: “O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah while you witness [to their truth]? O People of the Scripture, why do you confuse the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know?”
The accusation here is disbelief and concealing truth—not textual corruption.
Surah 2:75: “Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort it after they had understood it while they were knowing?”
This speaks of misinterpreting (“distort”) the meaning—not changing the words themselves.
The Qur’an accuses Jews and Christians of misunderstanding and rejecting Scripture, not of altering the manuscripts.
3. How Was It Corrupted?
If the Bible was corrupted, we should find evidence of tampering:
- Manuscripts with crossed-out sections
- Different versions circulating with contradictory content
- Historical records of councils ordering changes
We find none of this.
Instead, we find:
- 5,800+ Greek New Testament manuscripts dating from the 2nd century to the 15th century
- Dead Sea Scrolls proving the Old Testament was copied faithfully for over 1,000 years
- Early church fathers quoting the New Testament extensively (we could reconstruct almost the entire NT from their quotes alone)
The manuscript evidence proves the Bible has been preserved accurately.
If Allah’s words cannot be changed (Qur’an 6:115), and the Bible is Allah’s word (Qur’an 5:46-47), then the Bible we have today is the Bible Allah revealed.
What the Qur’an Says vs. What Muslims Are Told
Let’s compare what the Qur’an says with what many Muslims believe today:
| What the Qur’an Says | What Muslims Often Believe |
|---|---|
| Torah contains “guidance and light” (5:46) | Torah is corrupted and unreliable |
| Gospel contains “guidance and light” (5:46) | Gospel is corrupted and unreliable |
| Allah’s words cannot be changed (6:115) | The Bible has been changed |
| Christians should judge by the Gospel (5:47) | Christians should not follow the Gospel |
| Torah and Gospel confirm the Qur’an (5:46-48) | The Bible contradicts the Qur’an |
If you are a Muslim, you must ask yourself: Am I following what the Qur’an says, or what I’ve been told the Qur’an says?
Why Muslims Avoid the Bible
If the Qur’an affirms the Bible and commands people to read it, why do Muslims avoid it?
Reason 1: Fear of Conflicting Teachings
The Bible and Qur’an contradict each other on major doctrines:
On Jesus’ Identity:
- Bible: Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man (John 1:1, 14; Colossians 2:9)
- Qur’an: Jesus is a prophet, not God’s son (Surah 5:116, 19:35)
On Jesus’ Death:
- Bible: Jesus was crucified, died, and rose from the dead (Matthew 27-28; 1 Corinthians 15)
- Qur’an: Jesus was not crucified—Allah made it appear so (Surah 4:157)
On Salvation:
- Bible: Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6)
- Qur’an: Salvation is by works and submission to Allah’s law (Surah 23:102-103)
If you read the Bible, you will see these contradictions. And you’ll have to decide which book is telling the truth.
Reason 2: Social Pressure
In many Muslim communities, reading the Bible is discouraged or forbidden. Converts to Christianity face persecution, disownment, or worse.
But truth should not be determined by social pressure. If the Qur’an affirms the Bible and you avoid reading it out of fear, you are not submitting to Allah—you are submitting to cultural tradition.
Reason 3: Trust in Imams and Scholars
Many Muslims rely on imams and Islamic scholars to tell them what the Bible says rather than reading it themselves.
But what if they’re wrong?
The Qur’an does not tell you to trust scholars. It tells you to seek knowledge and test truth (Surah 17:36).
Why not read the Bible yourself and see what it says?
The Prophet Muhammad and the Bible
In The Life of Muhammad (Sirat Rasul Allah) by Ibn Ishaq, one of the earliest and most trusted Islamic biographies of Muhammad, there is a telling account:
When a group of Jews came to Muhammad to settle a dispute, Muhammad agreed that he believed in the Torah and followed the religion of Abraham (page 397 in Ibn Ishaq’s biography).
If Muhammad believed in the Torah, why don’t Muslims today?
If Muhammad affirmed the Torah’s authority in his own time, it could not have been corrupted by then—otherwise, he would have rejected it.
And if it was not corrupted by Muhammad’s time (7th century AD), then the manuscripts we have today (which match those from before Muhammad) are reliable.
Does Allah Protect His Word or Not?
The claim that the Bible was corrupted creates a serious theological problem:
If Allah revealed the Torah and Gospel, but they were corrupted, then either:
- Allah was unable to protect His Word — This makes Allah weak and impotent. Lowly humans thwarted His plan.
- Allah was unwilling to protect His Word — This makes Allah unjust and immoral. He let His people follow corrupted commands.
Both options are unacceptable for a Muslim. Allah is supposed to be all-powerful and all-good.
But the Qur’an resolves this problem by stating clearly:
Surah 6:115: “None can alter His words.”
If Allah’s words cannot be altered, then the Torah and Gospel Allah revealed have not been altered.
The Bible you can read today is the same Bible that existed in Muhammad’s time—and he affirmed it.
An Invitation to Read for Yourself
Here’s what we’re asking you to do:
Don’t take our word for it. Don’t take your imam’s word for it. Read the Bible yourself and see what it says.
Start with the Gospel of Matthew. Read one chapter a day. Ask yourself:
- Does this sound like a corrupted book?
- Does this align with what the Qur’an says about Isa (Jesus)?
- Is this “guidance and light” as the Qur’an claims?

What You’ll Discover When You Read the Bible
If you read the Gospels honestly, you will discover:
1. Jesus Claims to Be God
John 8:58: “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.'”
Jesus is claiming the divine name—”I AM”—that God revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14). The Jews understood this and tried to stone Him for blasphemy.
John 10:30: “I and the Father are one.”
Jesus claims unity with God the Father—not just as a prophet, but in essence and nature.
2. Jesus Was Crucified and Rose from the Dead
Matthew 27:35: “And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among them by casting lots.”
Matthew 28:5-6: “But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as He said.'”
The crucifixion and resurrection are central to the Gospel. Without them, Christianity doesn’t exist.
The Qur’an denies this (Surah 4:157). But the Bible—affirmed by the Qur’an as Allah’s revelation—clearly teaches it.
Which book is telling the truth?
3. Salvation Is a Gift, Not Earned
Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Salvation is not about good deeds outweighing bad deeds. It’s about trusting in Jesus’ finished work on the cross.
The Choice Before You
You are at a crossroads.
Option 1: Trust what you’ve been told about the Bible—that it’s corrupted, unreliable, and should be avoided.
Option 2: Trust what the Qur’an says about the Bible—that it’s Allah’s revelation, contains guidance and light, and should be followed.
You can’t have it both ways.
If you avoid the Bible, you are contradicting the Qur’an’s own teaching.
If you read the Bible, you will face difficult questions about the contradictions between the Bible and the Qur’an—but at least you’ll be seeking truth honestly.
What will you choose?
A Prayer for Truth-Seekers
If you’re ready to seek truth—even if it challenges what you’ve always believed—pray this prayer:
“Allah, You are the God of truth. You command us to seek knowledge and test what we’ve been taught. we want to know the truth about Isa (Jesus) and the Injil (Gospel). Guide me into truth, even if it’s uncomfortable. Show me what is real, not just what I’ve been told. we ask for Your wisdom and clarity. Amen.”
Then read the Gospel of Matthew with an open heart. Don’t read it through the lens of what you’ve been told. Let it speak for itself.
Ask: “Is this the Word of Allah, as the Qur’an claims?”
What If You Discover the Bible Is True?
If you read the Bible and become convinced it’s true, you’ll face a choice:
Follow Jesus as Lord and Savior, or continue in Islam.
This is not an easy choice. Many Muslims who come to faith in Jesus face rejection from family, persecution from community, and loss of identity.
But truth is worth it.
Jesus said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
If Jesus is who He claimed to be—God in the flesh, the Savior of the world—then following Him is the only rational response.
How to Follow Jesus
If you’re ready to leave Islam and follow Jesus, here’s how to begin:
1. Repent and Believe
Admit you are a sinner in need of forgiveness. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose from the dead. Trust Him alone for salvation.
Pray: “Jesus, I have been taught many things about You, but now I see the truth. You are not just a prophet—You are the Son of God, my Lord and Savior. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Forgive me. Save me. I give You my life. In Your name, amen.”
2. Read the Bible Daily
Start with the Gospel of John, then read the rest of the New Testament. Let God’s Word transform your thinking.
3. Find a Church
You need community. Find a Bible-believing church where you can grow in faith and be supported. Don’t try to follow Jesus alone.
4. Be Prepared for Cost
Following Jesus may cost you family, friends, or community. But Jesus promised: “Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for My name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life” (Matthew 19:29).
5. Get Help
There are ministries that help Muslims transition to Christianity. Reach out for support. You are not alone.
Conclusion: The Qur’an Points You to the Bible
The irony is this: The Qur’an itself directs you to read the Bible.
It affirms the Torah and Gospel as Allah’s revelation. It says Allah’s words cannot be changed. It commands Christians and Jews to follow their Scriptures.
If you avoid the Bible, you are not obeying the Qur’an—you are obeying cultural tradition.
If you read the Bible, you are following what the Qur’an commands.
So here’s our final question:
Will you read the Bible for yourself and discover what it says about Jesus?
Or will you trust secondhand information and never know the truth?
The choice is yours. But the Qur’an has already told you what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Didn’t Christians change the Bible to make Jesus God?
A: No. We have thousands of manuscripts from the first few centuries—long before any council or church authority could have made coordinated changes. These manuscripts affirm Jesus’ divinity, His crucifixion, and His resurrection. The text has been preserved accurately.
Q: What about the Council of Nicaea? Didn’t they change the Bible?
A: No. The Council of Nicaea (325 AD) did not change the Bible or “vote on” which books were Scripture. It addressed the Arian heresy (which denied Jesus’ full divinity) and affirmed what Christians had always believed: Jesus is fully God. The New Testament canon was already established by this time.
Q: If the Bible is true, why are there four Gospels? Shouldn’t there be one?
A: The four Gospels provide four perspectives on Jesus’ life—like four witnesses describing the same event from different angles. They complement each other and provide a fuller picture. Their differences actually increase credibility because they show independent testimony, not collusion.
Q: What will happen to me if I leave Islam?
A: That depends on your family and community. Some ex-Muslims face rejection, disownment, or persecution. But many find that the freedom and peace they gain in Christ is worth the cost. Jesus warned that following Him would cost something (Luke 14:26-27), but He also promised eternal life and joy (John 10:10).
Q: Can I be both Muslim and Christian?
A: No. Christianity and Islam make mutually exclusive claims. You cannot believe Jesus is the Son of God (Christianity) and that He is not the Son of God (Islam) at the same time. You must choose.

Original summary: The Qur’an is clear. The Word of Allah cannot be changed or corrupted. (6:115, 6:34, 10:64) The Qur’an claims the Bible is the Word of God. (4:136, 2:136, 29:46) The Torah is the reliable Word of God. (5:43) The Gospel is the reliable Word of God. (5:47) If the Torah and Gospel were corrupted, why would the Qur’an command Jews to follow the Torah and Christians to follow the Gospel? In The Life of Mohammad (397) by Ibn Ishaq, when responding to a group of Jews, the prophet agrees he believes in the Torah and follows the “religion of Abraham.” If Jews and Christians have mistranslated the Bible as many Muslims claim, why does the Qur’an say they only misinterpret and disbelieve it? (3:70-71) The myth the Bible has been corrupted presents clear problems. To believe it, one must reject the plain teaching of Allah and the Qur’an. Second, believing the Bible was corrupted means either Allah could not or would not protect His Word. Such a belief either implies Allah is inept and can be thwarted by lowly mortals or that He must be immoral, allowing His people to follow corrupted commands.
